At the airport we actively encourage colleagues to get involved in volunteering opportunities and launched Community Champions in 2010. Community Champions is a programme that all East Midlands Airport employees can get involved in, by taking some time out of their day job to volunteer in the local community.
Volunteering is beneficial to both the business and the community, with community members seeing support for their initiative, and colleagues feeling motivated and engaged.
During 2015/16 colleagues were involved in a variety of Community Relations programmes ranging from working with visitors in the Aerozone, supporting the Work Experience Programme, getting involved in Mock Interview sessions and supporting the annual flight to Lapland for children with life limiting illnesses. We also organised a number of one off activities which included World Book Day, Bring Your Child to Work Day and an enrichment day at John Port School. In total, 23% of East Midlands Airport colleagues volunteered over 800 hours during 2015/16.
As a key player in the region, we are committed to supporting our local community as part of the way we do business. That is why all colleagues who take part in the Community Champions scheme are able to dedicate two working days per year to take part in volunteering activities.
