Must see:
Take the egg-shaped cable cars (‘Les Bulles’) all the way up to the hillside Bastille for a superb view of the Isere river and the town in the valley below.
Must eat at:
Have a good old fashioned dip at La Fondue on Rue Brocherie for lashings of traditional emmental and gruyere, as well as some more interesting fondue variants, including cheddar. Dip and ye shall find.
Must be there for:
Every March or April (depending on the religious calendar) the Foire des Rameaux consumes the whole esplanade in a blur of light, movement and candy floss. The town’s annual Easter Fair is not to be missed.
Well-travelled tips:
Stop off at St Clair Les Halles for the freshest local shopping in the covered food hall.
The former bishop’s palace houses the remarkable Musee de l’Ancien Eveche which includes what is left of the city’s Roman walls and a 4th century baptistry uncovered during work for tram line B.
