Kittila, Finland
Gateway to an Arctic winter wonderland
Kittila is the gateway to an Arctic winter wonderland, especially for skiers. Its proximity to Levi, voted best ski resort in Finland no fewer than four times, makes it ideal for all sorts of downhill action, especially when you consider that Levi has 48 slopes (including 15 floodlit and 10 for children) as well as 26 ski lifts. Snow, should you be interested, is always guaranteed.

Must see:
Not so much as ‘must see’ as a ‘must do’, Kittila, and especially its near neighbour Levi are a true winter sports paradise, with a lot more than skiing on offer. From husky safaris to reindeer sleighs, ice fishing and snow-mobiling, there’s no end of choice.
Must be there for:
Levi’s winter sports season is unseasonally long – and visitors have been known to snowboard there as early as October and as late as June. Peak season, however, runs from Christmas through to April.
Well-travelled tips:
Levi has no fewer than 230km of cross-country ski track and 750km of snowmobiling track – so there’s no excuse not to get out and see a bit of the local landscape.
Head off in search of the Snow Village Lainio and you won’t be disappointed – it, as the name suggests, is an entire ‘village’ made from densely packed snow.
