Inspiring Young People
Supporting young people in education is of great importance to us. With hundreds of different job roles available at the airport, it is imperative that we engage a future workforce.
Aerozone
To support our commitment to education, we have launched an on-site education centre, the Aerozone. It offers educational opportunities for groups of all ages, studying a variety of airport related subjects ranging from Science to Engineering to Travel and Tourism.
Additionally, we offer specially developed curriculum enhancing education resources in a range of subjects. These include GCSE Business Studies, Environmental Science, Maths and Engineering. We can also work with teachers to create a bespoke package for your school or college.
The Aerozone offers students and teachers the opportunity to get involved in the airport experience and find out what happens behind the scenes in a fun and interactive way.
New for 2011 is East Minilands, a space within the Aerozone which provides great opportunities for role play. Developed as a mini airport, East Minilands incorporates the key areas along the passenger journey, so students get the opportunity to see replica areas that they wouldn't normally have access to on a visit to the airport.
This space has been designed to offer schools and colleges a hands on, fun and realistic learning environment.

The airport is a diverse, fast paced and truly exciting workplace and we have great pleasure in inviting numerous students to join us for an action packed week each year.
East Midlands Airport was awarded the Business in the Community regional award for ‘Work Inspiration’ for its work experience programme in 2010.
With a broad range of student interests, we have extended our work experience programme to incorporate two placement types. These programmes are however subject to change for 2012.
Programme One – Travel and Tourism
This programme is a week long opportunity focussing on the Travel and Tourism elements of the airport. The programme will give students an understanding of the varied roles within the Travel and Tourism sector that are available at the airport.
The 2012 programme will include time in the following areas (subject to change or operational requirements):
- Information Desk
- Switchboard
- Airline Crew Operations
- Community Relations
- Catering
- Customer Services
- Hospitality
- Flight Check In
- Passenger Assistance.
Programme Two – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths
This programme is a week long opportunity for students with an interest in Science. Technology, Engineering or Maths. The programme will give students an understanding of some of the behind the scenes roles that are available at the airport.
The 2012 programme will include time in the following areas (subject to change or operational requirements):
- Motor Transport
- Research and Development
- Projects
- Sustainability
- Property and Planning
- Air Traffic Control
- Airfield Operations
- Fire Station
- Finance.
For both programmes, students may be assigned small projects (information gathering, written pieces etc) to help them gain an understanding of how the departments work together to make the airport operate. Alternatively time in some departments may be purely observational.
As you may expect, placements at the airport are limited and highly sought after, so if you are interested in applying for a placement please read the guidelines below:
- Applicants must hold a valid passport or the placement cannot go ahead.
- The Airport can accept two students per month, one for each placement type.
- The placements will take place between April and October 2012.
- Placements are geared towards Year 10 requirements; however older students may also apply.
- Priority will be given to schools and colleges nearest to the Airport.
- Successful applicants are only chosen after the deadline date.
- Applications must be with the Airport before the deadline date for your chosen month to ensure that they are considered.
- You must complete a 2012 application form to be considered for a placement.

Keeping schools in the Loop
The Loop is a news sheet produced by the Community Relations team which has been designed to keep schools and colleges in the region informed about education activities that take place at East Midlands Airport and in the Aerozone. If you would like to receive a copy of The Loop, please contact us to be added to the mailing list.
Vouchers for Schools
Each year the Community Relations team organise the collection of schools vouchers, given out at local supermarkets. Boxes are placed around the airport site for colleagues to place their unwanted vouchers into. These vouchers are then collected and handed over to local Primary Schools.
