Energy Use and Waste
Serving 5 million passengers every year - with facilities including catering, baggage handling, security, retail and administration - means that we consume large quantities of power and generate large quantities of waste.
Our Policy
Our environmental policy commits us to:
- Seek to minimise the production of waste at source and to work with business partners to promote the re-use and recycling of waste materials.
- Seek to minimise the consumption of energy by implementing programmes of monitoring and assessment.
Our Programmes
The airport operates a materials recycling facility, handling 700 tonnes of waste annually. This facility has segregated disposal facilities for many wastes including wood, metals, cardboard, paper, magazines, glass and light fitments. We have worked in partnership with the major companies on site to recycle between 25-30% of the waste we handle.

Our major consumption of resources includes gas for heating, electricity for heating and lighting and water for toilets and hand basins. Our terminal building has a computer controlled building management system and by rigorous monitoring we are striving to continually reduce our consumption.
