Landscaping and Ecology
East Midlands Airport occupies some 1100 hectares, much of which is grassland. We are keen to promote a species rich habitat and to encourage the local community to explore the airport site.
Our Policy
Our environmental policy commits us to:
Develop a landscaping and ecology strategy that, within the constraints imposed by the normal operation of the airport, seeks to promote the development of rich and varied habitats, to integrate the airport within its rural setting and to promote access to the airport site.
Our Programmes
We have completed a 6 mile circular footpath encircling the airport site and providing stunning views of both airport and its rural setting. With links to the Aeropark we provide a picnic site and in time we hope to add artwork and other items of interest to the route.
We have sought to involve local schools in our work and have undertaken tree-planting sessions around the airport as part of the National Curriculum.

The airport provides a safe refuge for species in decline elsewhere including skylarks, hares and smooth newts. By judiciously managing our site we hope to protect and promote the development of these and other species.
