Leisure Passengers Are Highest In Country

Figures released today by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) show East Midlands Airport having the highest number of leisure passengers in the country.

With 4.7million passengers in 2006, leisure passengers at EMA accounted for 87.6% of their total number of passengers, the highest out of eleven surveyed airports including Stansted and Gatwick Airport. Alicante was the most popular destination for leisure passengers, followed by Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Dublin and Rome.

Business passengers accounted for 12.4 per cent of all passengers at East Midlands Airport in 2006, with Glasgow being the most popular route for business passengers, followed by Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin and Amsterdam.

Commenting on these figures, Penny Coates, Managing Director, East Midlands Airport said
“The figures released by the CAA show that we have worked extremely hard to offer our customers a wide portfolio of destinations from their local airport. In 2007, we have had month on month passenger growth; the August bank holiday alone was one of the highest year on year increases in the country.”

2% of all UK passengers flew from EMA in 2006, with an overall increase of 4% of total passengers flying from a regional airport (98million passengers versus 95 million in 2005).

Passenger numbers at East Midlands Airport have continued to rise for the eighth consecutive month with increasing annual figures, year to date (January to August) rising by 17% (3,651,451) from the same period last year (3,131,419).

The Airport handled a total of 598,757 passengers in August 2007, an increase of 14% on August 2006 (524,075). Palma was the regions favourite European getaway destination in August, closely followed by Dublin, Alicante and Malaga.
