Must see:
If you can, make the pilgrimage to Cozumel, Mexico’s most populous island and sub-aqua playground, with over 100 dive sites. To get there, take the passenger ferry from Playa Del Carmen.

Must eat at:
If seafood’s your thing (and in Cancun it should be high on your wish list), head for La Habichuela on Margaritas for truly delicious shrimp and lobster (and a rather fine aquarium).

Must be there for:
Carnaval, annually in February or March, varies with the calendar, but promises riotous celebrations, not to mention beautiful weather.

Well-travelled tips:
Cancun’s peak season runs from December to April – expect higher prices (and marginally better weather).
Make sure to book a coach trip to the jaw-dropping Mayan ruins at Tulum, and, especially at Chichen Itza for a glimpse of life in an ancient civilisation.
