Naples, Italy

Naples

Naples is a wonderful city of contradictions

With 2500 years of history and as much art and culture as you could wish, not to mention an UNESCO World Heritage Listing for its trouble. Beautiful and at times down-at-heel – the city gives way to the splendour of the Bay of Naples, Amalfi Coast, Neapolitan Riviera and Mount Vesuvius as a dramatic backdrop.

Must see:
In a city with a penchant for truly beautiful churches, the New Jesuit Church is a real must-visit sight. Go and admire its rich Baroque flourishes, and pop in to admire Donatello’s altar at St Angelo on the Nile, while you’re there.

Must eat at:
It’s almost the local law that one must eat pizza here in the city that gave the world the dish. Seek out some of the more authentic local pizza haunts and turn the clock back to a world before lavish toppings. Da Michele is a local favourite that serves just two of the original, classic varieties.

Must be there for:
The Naples Antique Fair is held on the last two weekends of every month in the gardens of the Villa Communale. Even if you’re not into antiques, it’s worth visiting just to see how Italians can haggle over some truly beautiful old pieces.

Well-travelled tips:
- Treat yourself to a hydrofoil trip to one of the beautiful outlying islands or coastal towns. There are plenty to choose from to destinations including Capri, Amalfi and Sorrento.
- If you hire a car locally and you’re just starting your journey, you may wish to avoid rush hour...

Visa:
British citizens do not need a visa to visit Italy.
