Runway 1 Surface Material Information

Manchester Airport has recently used the French airfield asphalt concrete material BBA (Béton Bitumineux pour chausées Aéronautiques) to resurface its principal runway, R05L/23R (R1). The material was laid ungrooved due to its inherent surface texture, which is relatively coarse whilst retaining good aggregate density. Close observations were carried out during the construction and in service and this showed a unique trend in the development of “early life” wet friction characteristics.
