Environment

At East Midlands Airport, we are committed to looking after our local environment.

In 2002 we became the first airport in the UK to be certified to the Environmental Management Standard ISO14001 and we have retained that status ever since. In 2003 we were awarded the national business award for environmental awareness and in 2006 we were the first airport in Europe to make public radar recordings of our operations, using the WebTrak system.

Climate change is important to us and in 2006 we announced our determination to reduce our emissions of carbon dioxide, with a commitment to make the Airport’s operations carbon neutral by 2012. Helping us achieve that target are the two 250kW wind turbines installed in May 2011 that are expected to meet 5% of the site's energy requirements while saving around 300 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

Noise Action Plan

The Airport’s Noise Action Plan (NAP) has been formally adopted by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The NAP was developed to meet the requirements of the Environmental Noise Directive and the Environmental Noise (England) Regulations 2006 (as amended). It details how the Airport will manage the noise environment in order to minimise any adverse impact of aircraft operations on our neighbours wherever practicable.
