Investing in our Colleagues
This year we launched an initiative to encourage airport colleagues to get involved in some of the activities that the Community Relations and Environment teams are involved in. The scheme, called Sustainability Champions has three strands:
Environmental Champion
This strand is designed to encourage colleagues to think about what they do during their working day and how they can do it more environmentally friendly. The environment is at the heart of our target to achieve carbon neutral ground operations by 2012, so colleagues have a great opportunity to get involved in this.
Community Champion
This strand is designed to encourage colleagues to get involved in volunteering activities within the communities that surround the airport. Since the scheme launched earlier this year we have already had a fire watch undertake a volunteering day in Castle Donington, a colleague sign up for a paired reading scheme and a number of colleagues from across the site involved in Give and Gain Day, a national volunteering day.
Green Travel Champion
This strand is designed to encourage colleagues to travel to work in a sustainable way. This includes cycling, catching the bus or train, walking or car sharing. The airport fire fighters are a shining example when it comes to green travel. The majority of them lift share or cycle to work, helping them to earn their status as green travellers.
As a key player in the region, we are committed to supporting our local community as part of the way we do business. That is why all colleagues who take part in the Sustainability Champions scheme are able to dedicate one working day per year to take part in volunteering activities.
If you have a project that could do with some extra manpower, please get in touch.
