Small but perfectly formed Rzeszow, near Poland’s south-eastern frontier, is a city with a historic core, having been founded back in 1354.

Must see:
The 18^th century palace of local notables, the Lubomirski family, dominates the skyline, in a ‘wedding cake’ style. Their castle in Rzeszow is a fascinating glimpse of how Poland’s Other Half used to live.

Must eat at:
To experience the kind of wholesome local food that keeps the winter chills away, spend an evening at the cozy and comfy Czarny Kot (or ‘Black Cat’), not far from the main square.

Must be there for:
The local bugle call is not to be missed – composed as recently as 1997, you can hear it every three hours in the city’s main square.

Well-travelled tips:
- If you’re lucky enough while you’re there, you might encounter one of the city’s many festivals – when accommodation can get tight. You’ll need to book in advance to get a room for the regular World Festival of Folk Groups, which celebrates Polish culture worldwide.

- The city holds its own party every New Year in the Old Town Square – expect to down a few vodkas to steel yourself against the cold!
