Antalya

A booming clifftop resort

This booming clifftop resort town on the South-Western Turkish coast keeps its good looks and fine weather well into October. It’s even said that the original Saint Nicholas – aka Santa Claus – was from around here. That comes as no surprise from an ancient city steeped in history, courtesy of its Lycian, Pamphylian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman influences. For a lesson in ancient civilisation, just take your pick.

Must see:
Even if you’re based at a resort out of town, make an effort to come in to the heart of the action to explore the historic Kaleici – or old town – on foot. It’s cute, cobbled and the place to sit back with a cold beer and watch the world go by.

Must eat at:
Chic and sleek, the Kirmizi gastrodome in the 21st century Hillside Su hotel complex (with its hundreds of all-white rooms) has to be experienced to be believed – whether you’re eating inside or out.

Must be there for:
Celebrate the end of summer and catch a few final rays to the beat of a decidedly European rhythm - the Mediterranean International Music Festival comes to town every October.

Well-travelled tips:
Although public transport is still in its infancy in town, a useful (and cheap) tram system and light rail network are open for business, with planned extensions all the way to 2020.
For a serious cultural infusion, head to Termessos 22 miles away for some of the Med’s most impressive Pisidian ruins.

Visa:
British citizens travelling to Turkey do need a visa, unless they are cruise ship passengers who enter the country for a day trip and return to the ship the same day. British citizens may obtain a multiple entry visitor's visa valid for 90 days at the port of entry on payment of £10 in cash.
