Mozart’s birthplace (Mozarts Geburthaus) gives you a sense of the brilliance of the great man – not only his musical genius, but his sheer productivity across his relatively short life. Go, and have your eyes (and ears) opened to the magic of Amadeus.
Must eat at:
Esszimmer, on Mullner Haupstrasse, will drag you from Mozart’s era to the 21st century in a nanosecond. Ultra-hip and contemporary, it serves up an Austrian take on French specialities, with a real hint of relish. And it’s delicious, too.
Must be there for:
Marking the birthday of its most famous son, Mozart Week, annually in late January, brings some of the world’s best orchestras to three venues in town to perform some of the great man’s finest work.
Well-travelled tips:
- Travel to nearby Gartenua then take the cable car to the 1300 metre summit of the Untersberg for some seriously fresh air and a dazzling view.
- Fancy a flutter? There’s a casino in town and it’s open all the way ‘til 3 in the morning.
