Pula

Pula is ranked as one of Croatia’s largest and most historically rich cities. A haven for both culture vultures and sun-lovers alike, its sunny weather, coastal scenery and wealth of ancient Roman architecture means it’s never short of visitors. Pula’s well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, The Arena, is one of Croatia’s most iconic sights and still hosts big name concerts and events over the summer.

This city is great for sightseeing and many of its significant places are within easy walking distance. Sergijevaca ulica is a charming pedestrianised street teeming with shops and cafes leading up to the Forum, or main square. The Zerostrasse Tunnels are a winding network of underground passages built during the first World War. The entrance ticket includes access to Pula Kastel which offers stunning views of the city.

The excellent variety of hotels and accommodation in the city make it ideal for families, while the locally produced herbal oils, fresh seasonal truffles, and handmade crafts make shopping for souvenirs a pleasure. For crafts and fresh produce head to the City Farmers’ Market, while Sergijevaca and Kandlerova are busy shopping areas popular for jewellery and clothes.

It’s easy to eat well in the Istria region and you’ll find an abundance of Italian restaurants and places serving traditional Croatian cooking. Many local dishes feature seafood and fresh fish, and you must try the local ice cream too. They’ve been producing top quality olive oil here for centuries and there’s even a museum devoted to it.
