Support for passengers with non-visible disabilities

Travelling with a non-visible disability

If you or a member of your party is travelling with a non-visible disability, we’ve got a range of assistance on offer to make your journey through the airport more comfortable.

You can also visit our Facilities page to find more information on useful facilities such as quiet rooms.

Lanyard scheme

We know that you might need more time, care, and understanding when travelling through the airport, which is why we run a green lanyard scheme. By wearing one our lanyards, it lets our staff know of your needs.

Simply pick one up from the Assisted Travel desk in the check- in hall, free of charge. Our teams also recognise the Sunflower Lanyard scheme that some customers may already use. Our lanyards can be used by any passenger for any reason.

Please note that the lanyards alone don’t automatically grant access to any Assisted Travel services, or express check in, security or boarding. Assistance must be pre-booked with the airline at least 48 hours prior to flight - find out more on our Requesting Assistance page.

Try Before You Fly

We also offer ‘Try Before You Fly’ visits throughout the year for those that require some familiarisation with the airport in advance of travel. More information is available on our Requesting Assistance page.

Travelling with...

Hearing and visual impairment

There are various points across the terminal where we have induction loop systems; these are clearly marked by the ‘sympathetic ear’ symbol. All signage across the airport is in high- contrast colours. If you require any assistance, please book this with your airline and discuss with us so we know how to best assist you.

We also have a live chat service that gives you information and assistance without the need for audible speech. You can use this service via WhatsApp on 07711 574 187.

We have partnered with online BSL interpreting service, InterpretersLive. More information is available on our Assistance at the airport page.

Dementia

Well-planned holidays can have great benefits for people with dementia. The Alzheimer's Society has put together a handy guide to help carers get the most out of the holiday. From what to pack, to the journey through the airport, it’s full of useful information.

A stoma

If you have a stoma, the thought of completing security checks may seem daunting. Please be reassured that all of our security officers receive stoma awareness training, so you can be confident that you will be guided through the security process with dignity and care. You can find more information about travelling with a stoma through our handy top tips blog, or on the Colostomy UK website.
