Travelling with a stoma

Fly with confidence on your next trip

Your handy stoma travel guide

Our travel experts have rounded up their top tips to help you prepare and have a seamless journey through our airport. Maybe it’s your first time travelling after surgery, or you’re eager to pick up some tips to travelling with your stoma. Either way, we’re here to help.

There may be a few extra steps to help prepare for your getaway, but that’s why we’re here to guide you through.

Please note - if you’ve had surgery in the last six weeks or have been in hospital during the last six months, it's important to check with your GP or surgeon that it’s safe for you to travel.

Book a seat near to the toilet

The preparation starts as soon as you book your flights. It's a good idea to book an aisle seat close to the toilets. This way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you have easy access whenever you need it.

It also means that if you want to get up for a little stroll or stretch, you don't need to bother anyone to get past.

Secure travel insurance

It’s important to get travel insurance that covers your condition. This fact sheet lists companies with policies suitable for ostomates and people with pre-existing medical conditions. It’s a good idea to contact a few different companies to get a quote – both prices and their level of cover will vary.

You’ll also need to carry a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which lets you get necessary state healthcare if you’re in a European country, and some other countries. This card has replaced the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), but you can continue to use it until you reach the expiry date.

Bring along a handy travel certificate

If you’re worried about having to explain your stoma to Security officers, a handy travel certificate will do the job. Available from Colostomy UK, your stoma supply company may also be able to offer you one.

The certificate explains your medical condition and lets staff know that you may need to urgently use toilet facilities.

Stock up on plenty of supplies

It's a good idea to collect plenty of supplies so you’re prepared for both the journey and while you’re on holiday. It’s good practise to double up on the normal number of supplies you’d use at home and add a few extras for good measure. Changes in weather and the environment may mean your bag needs to be changed more often. Remember that this also includes wipes, tissues and disposal bags.

If you normally used a closed bag, it may be useful to take a few drainable bags with you too in case of any stomach upsets.

Watch what you eat the day before you travel

Air travel can make some people a bit windy, so it’s good to avoid any food or drink the day before that’s known to cause you problems. This might include spicy or fatty food, as well as fizzy drinks.

But don’t skip meals altogether, as this can cause excessive wind and fluid. Instead, have small, frequent meals the day before you fly.

Pack supplies in hand luggage

For peace of mind, keep your supplies in your hand luggage just in case your main luggage gets lost. For hand luggage size limits, check with your airline as they tend to vary.

If your supplies don’t fit the hand luggage limit, Colostomy UK’s booklet will give you guidance.

Wear loose fitting clothes

Comfort is key, so it’s time to dig out your comfiest airport outfit. Cabin pressure can cause your feet, ankles, and waistline to swell especially on long haul flights, so it’s a good idea to wear soft, baggy clothes.

Drinking plenty of water and walking around every so often can help minimise swelling.

At the airport

Our green lanyard scheme can help you have a comfortable journey through the airport. Wearing these lanyards lets our friendly staff know that you may need more time, care and understanding whilst travelling through. Simply pick one up from the Assisted Travel desk in the check- in hall, free of charge. We also recognise the Sunflower Lanyard scheme. Find out more.

Our accessible toilets opposite Gate 8, Gate 14 and in our Castle Rock restaurant are all ‘Stoma- friendly’ according to Colostomy UK standards. You may not need to use our Assisted Travel service, but if you need any support, our award-winning team are on hand to assist. Use the intercom at our assistance points, or you can WhatsApp message the team on 07711574187.
