About Genoa

Genoa is a beautiful destination in the northwest of Italy and is often describes as one of the countries most underrated cities. It was once the capital city of its own empire; the Most Serene Republic of Genoa, and has a rich history that dates back further than the Roman Empire. In recent years the city has become well-known for its spectacular aquarium, which reaches out into the bustling harbour, and its football team, Genoa F.C. Genoa is a fantastic alternative destination for lovers of Italian culture with plenty of history, attractions and unique events to keep you coming back for years to come.

From luxurious holiday complexes to upmarket city hotels and smaller bed and breakfasts, Genoa has a wide range of accommodation to suit all visitors. If you’re a fan of the director Wes Anderson you try the tremendous Grand Hotel Savoie, which is famous for its service and striking resemblance to the fictional Grand Budapest Hotel. If you want a truly luxurious stay, you may want to consider a stay at the Melia Genova, which is furnished with both an indulgent spa and a variety of stylish contemporary suites. Those seeking a more traditional stay should book at the Olympia Hotel Genova, which has a classic Italian theme.

Even if it isn’t traditionally a destination for shoppers, Genoa has plenty for those hoping to enjoy a shopping spree. Your first stop should be the Fiumara Shopping Centre as it’s jam-packed full of big-brands and high street staples. However, if you’d rather enjoy the work of local craftsmen and artisans, a visit to the Via Garibaldi or Mercato Orientale should be on the cards with their many handmade souvenirs and ornaments. No matter what, every visitor to Genoa should swing by the Romeo Viganotti, one of the oldest chocolate factories in the region where you’ll be able to sample many of their delicious treats.

Italy is renowned for its cuisine around the world and Genoa continues this proud tradition with a selection of its own local delicacies. The signature dish of the region is pesto and focaccia bread, which makes for the perfect pitstop between visits to the city’s attractions. If you’re looking for something a little stranger you may want to try the savoury Torta Pasqualin pies or Forinata pancakes. Of course, many of Genoa’s traditional restaurants offer a selection of fresh pasta and pizza for an authentic Italian taste.

Genoa’s residents have a flair for the dramatic and nowhere is that easier to see than in their unique traditions and festivals, any of them makes a good centrepiece for a holiday in the city:

Euroflora

Half a million professional florists descend upon the city of Genoa during Euroflora for a gigantic floristry and gardening festive. The streets become filled with flowers and breath-taking natural arrangements as visitors compete to show off their talents. As it only happens every five years, Euroflora is an absolute must for anyone fortunate enough to be visiting during the festivities.

Suq a Genova

A festival of enlightenment that brings world music, thought-provoking lectures and art to the streets of the city, Suq a Genova is run by the Suq a Genova society every June and is beloved by the people of Genova. There are lots of fireworks and celebrations to enjoy, making this the perfect event for families visiting the city.

Circumnavigando

Circumnavigando is a winter festival held in December where clowns and other street performers flood the streets of the city. Circus skills and hijinks take over creating a brilliant alternative Christmas Holiday for families.
